McLaren MCL39 Mercedes F1 winner Monaco GP 2025

Lando’s Tunnel Vision

After Red Bull had clearly dominated F1 for four years with Max Verstappen, securing four consecutive world championship titles, the two McLaren drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, finally appeared to be on a par with them in the 2025 season with the McLaren MCL39 Mercedes. Team principal Zak Brown initially let his two drivers race freely without intervening tactically, and so, ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, Oscar Piastri was leading the championship ahead of team-mate Lando Norris. But the 25-year-old Briton had a clear goal in mind. Runner-up the previous year, the 2025 World Championship title was his stated objective. By Monaco at the latest, Norris switched to tunnel vision. Pole position – just a tenth of a second ahead of Charles Leclerc in the Ferrari – was the ideal foundation for a victory in the Principality. Norris took the lead straight away and during the pit stops never dropped further than fourth place. Although Max Verstappen led for 27 laps in the final third of the race, he had to make the mandatory tyre change once more shortly before the finish. This sealed Lando Norris’s first Monaco victory. With his team-mate finishing third, Piastri and Norris now topped the World Championship standings, but it remained tense right to the end of the season. A mere two points separated the new world champion Lando Norris from four-time champion Max Verstappen after the 2025 finale.
