Lotus 49B Cosworth V8 F1 Rob Walker 3° GP Monaco 1969

Wing Ban in Monaco<?xml:namespace prefix="o" />

After the high rear wings on both Lotus 49b had broken at highspeed at the previous Grand Prix in Spain – leading to serious accidents involving Graham Hill and Jochen Rindt – there had already been a row between Rindt and Lotus boss Colin Chapman ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix. In a letter, the Austrian accused Chapman of not taking the safety of his cars seriously. The stubborn Briton promptly replaced the Austrian with Richard Attwood for Monaco. But the Monaco organisers themselves also had serious concerns that, should a similar accident occur on the narrow street circuit in the Principality, spectators could lose their lives.

It was agreed that the wings would initially be permitted in practice but banned for the race. The rear wing was not allowed to be higher than the highest point of the car. For the teams, this meant a considerable amount of modification work, but the two race directors, Paul Frère and Charles Deutsch, were unwilling to take any risks. Jo Siffert’s privately entered Lotus 49b also presented an unusual sight after these modifications. The Swiss driver made the most of his talent despite the inferior car and managed to secure a place on the podium in third – just ahead of Team Lotus’s stand-in driver Attwood. From the following Dutch Grand Prix onwards, all cars were fitted with new, flat but large rear wings.
