Isotta Fraschini Tipo6-C 14° Le Mans 2024
The Italian Dream
Buses, lorries, aircraft engines and luxury cars – the range of products offered by the company, founded in Milan in 1899, was impressive until it was forced to close in 1949. After several changes of ownership, the name resurfaced in the automotive industry in the mid-1990s, but the prototypes on display never went into production. It was only with the arrival of Colombian energy billionaire Frank Kanayet Yepes that the Italian dream of reviving the great luxury brand seemed set to become a reality. Entering the 2024 World Sports Car Championship with the in-house developed Tipo 6.C seemed to be exactly the right marketing strategy. Following in the footsteps of Glickenhaus and Vanwall, the Italians were the third private team to have the courage to take on the superior works teams. No pure combustion engine – the brand’s ambition was to have its own hybrid powertrain, and so, in collaboration with HWA, a race-ready 3-litre 6-cylinder turbo engine was developed, which, with components from Bosch and Williams, became the hybrid LMDh. Duqueine Engineering managed the race entries and was delighted about a 14th place finish at Le Mans, but shortly afterwards the backers pulled the plug. The great motorsport dream of the former luxury brand Isotta Fraschini unfortunately lasted only one summer.
