The colour combination of light blue and orange as the corporate design of the Gulf Oil Company, originally from Pittsburgh/Pennsylvania, has been an almost iconic constant in motorsport since the 1960s. The Ford GT40 and Porsche 917 represented the Gulf colours at Le Mans. In modern times, the legendary livery has appeared in GT3 racing and once at the 2021 Monaco F1 Grand Prix on the two McLaren cars. Expectations were therefore high when Williams landed Gulf as a sponsor for the 2023 season. However, due to the limited budget, the Gulf stickers were only discreetly visible on the cars.
Fans did not let up, however, and so the team launched a competition, for which incredible 180,000 suggestions arrived. One design emerged as the clear winner: bolder than bold was the name of the winning design, with which the two Williams FW45s competed for the first time under the floodlights of the Singapore Grand Prix. The racing cars in light blue and orange caused quite a stir, even though Alex Albon finished eleventh, a mere 1.5 seconds short of a world championship point. This special livery was also used in Japan and Qatar before the team switched back to the regular dark blue colours.
