Jochen Mass began his racing career in 1970 at the age of 23. Just two years later, he was crowned European Touring Car Champion in a works Cologne Ford Capri and in the same year also impressed in Formula 2 with a victory in a works March 722 at the Eifelrennen on the demanding Nordschleife of the Nürburgring. John Surtees contracted the young talent for the 1973 F2 season and gave him the chance to make his Grand Prix debut in Formula 1. As runner-up in Formula 2 behind Jean-Pierre Jarier, the young German made his first Formula 1 start at Silverstone in July 1973.
Jochen Mass had qualified the spotless white Surtees TS14A in 14th position for the British Grand Prix, but was involved in a mass crash just a few metres after the start. Three weeks later, he had another chance at his home Grand Prix at the Nürburgring. For Sunday's race day only, the white Surtees was decorated with stickers of the German Auto Zeitung magazine and Mass did not disappoint his supporters. He finished 7th, a single second behind Emerson Fittipaldi’s Lotus, missing his first championship point only just. It was the first highlight of a still young Formula 1 career.
