Formula 1 Sidenote

As a successful Formula 2 contender Gordon Coppuck’s Spirit Team entered F1 in 1983 offering Honda a quiet and secret return to the top league. But the underfinanced team did not have the potential of making Honda’s V6 turbo engine a success so for 1984 the Japanese migrated to Williams. Meanwhile former McLaren designer Coppuck had developed his new Spirit 101 F1 chassis and he intended to race. All that was available for 1984 was Brian Hart’s 415T 4-cylinder turbocharged engine lacking nearly 100 hp compared to the top teams, however.

Emerson Fittipaldi took over pre-season testing at Brazilian Jacarepuaguá, was little enthusiastic and gave preference to Indy Car racing. Mauro Baldi was without an F1 drive for 1984 after a disillusioning season with Alfa Romeo so he took his funds to join Spirit Racing. With eight seconds behind the pole position time of Elio de Angelis and Lotus the Italian qualified the new red Spirit 24th on the grid at the season opening Brazilian Grand Prix. Not much was gained when a broken distributor stopped Baldi’s race after just 12 laps. It quickly became clear that it would be a difficult year for the British one-car-team. Still Mauro Baldi achieved three 8th position finishes before Huub Rothengatter took over with even less success. This Spirit 101 Hart Turbo is one of these typical Formula 1 sidenotes that keen F1 collectors particularly appreciate with SPARK’s 1/43 range.
