The last F1 appearance
The ATS team had shut down at the end of 1984 so after three years Manfred Winkelhock had to look for a new F1 cockpit for 1985. At RAM Skoal Bandit Gustav Brunner had designed the new RAM03 and even though the Hart 415 Turbo was almost 200 horses short of the 1,000 hp of the top engines, the Swabian simply had to accept this offer and integrate it into his parallel program with Kremer in the World Sports Car Championship. The German sponsors Augros and Liqui Moly did not miss out on the first Formula 1 appearance at the newly opened Nürburgring and provided a new livery for the German Grand Prix.
Both young German Formula 1 drivers Winkelhock and Bellof enjoyed a lot of attention at their home Grand Prix. So the RAM driver even got over his retirement on lap 9 when the Hart Turbo once again failed much too early, robbing the driver of the chance to proof his talent. Nobody could have guessed that the Augros RAM would deliver the last images of Manfred Winkelhock in Formula 1. Just one week later - on August 11, 1985 - he was killed in an accident at the World Sportscar Championship race at Mosport, Canada. Another 3 weeks later, Stefan Bellof also lost his life in a Group C Porsche. Germany was in shock.
