Six Porsche victories in a row since 1981 at Le Mans. With this recommendation the Rothmans Porsche works team approached the 1987 Le Mans 24 Hours. This time, however, they were far from being favourites after Jaguar and their XJR-8 had won nearly all the World Championship rounds ahead of Le Mans. Three Porsche 962C Rothmans works cars faced three works Jaguar XJR-8 Silk Cut. On the paper it was 3:3 but after a heavy practice accident the #19 Porsche could not start the race while the #18 car of Bob Wollek and Jochen Mass retired after just two hours in the race with a blown engine. Suddenly the #17 car had become a lone warrior.

The remaining Porsche 962C chassis no. 006 of Derek Bell, Hans Joachim Stuck and Al Holbert was a spare car in fact that had mainly been used in practice sessions before. Hard to believe that the superior Jaguar XJR-8s were defeated by the last one running of the Porsche 962C works trio. Two Silk Cut cars retired and the best British cat finished in a disappointing 5th position. This final Porsche Le Mans victory of the Group C era was doubtlessly to the credit of the extremely experienced drivers in combination with Porsche’s engineering abilities.
