After losing his F1 cockpit at the end of 1984 Jo Gartner used his great talent in endurance racing. 1986 saw a promising start into the season winning the Sebring 12 Hours with Hans Joachim Stuck. The Austrian drove a Kremer-Porsche at Le Mans when, during the night, probably a suspension broke on the long Hunaudières straight at more then 180 mph. The car hit the barrier, rolled, caught fire and was totally destroyed. Jo Gartner was killed instantly.
