Between the end of 1975 and the beginning of 1978, Porsche built a total of eight 935 works cars, with chassis no. 002 making its debut at the second round of the World Championship of Makes at Vallelunga in spring of 1976. In Martini colours right from the start, Porsche's new Group 5 weapon was a complete success. The driver pairings of Jochen Mass / Jacky Ickx and Manfred Schurti / Rolf Stommelen took pole position in almost every race. Initially, the 935 was still equipped with the normal Porsche front end, but was converted to the flat nose version from the 1000 km Nürburgring in 1976. Despite its superiority, only two victories were achieved in 1976 due to technical problems.
Porsche wanted to change this in 1977 and so the 935-002 was well prepared for the Daytona 24 Hours, the first round of the 1977 World Championship of Makes. Jacky Ickx and Jochen Mass were the fastest in qualifying again, just ahead of the Kremer Porsche 935 but far ahead of the rest of the 55 competitors. In the race, too, the No. 1 car was already clearly in the lead when a tyre puncture resulted in a long repair. Ickx and Mass fought their way back to second place in the 24-hour battle, but then another puncture caused a heavy crash that irreparably damaged the car. This farewell at Daytona was the end of the Porsche 935.002's relatively short racing career.
