Porsche's original pig was entered for the Le Mans 24 Hours of 1971 and the funny design was intended to hide the somewhat wide haunches of the 917/20. Instead designer Anatole Lapine's idea met with great disapproval in the public. Sponsor Martini's director Count Gregorio Rossi is even reported to have refused any Martini stickers on the car.
Nearly 50 years later the racing community seems to be much more tolerant as Porsche's great revival idea is widely applauded at the Sarthe and the 2018 Le Mans 24 Hours. The pink pig is not just an eye-catcher par excellence on the track, the 911 RSR works car even goes hog wild in the race.
When the drivers Michael Christensen, Kevin Estre and Laurens Vanthoor finish 15th overall and win the GTEPro class at Le Mans the German truffle hunter has become a cult object for good. Porsche's proboscidean has very well restored its reputation and the incredible demand for the pink pig models in any of the scales made Spark increase the production numbers several times.
