With Heart and Soul
The German Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft is still celebrated today for its spectacular Group 5 cars. Who doesn't remember the Porsche 935, Ford Zakspeed Turbo Capri, BMW 320 or Lancia Beta Montecarlo? However, if you look further back in the results lists of that time, you will find many courageous private entries that are completely forgotten today and of which only very few rare photos can be found. Günther Knippschild's Opel Kadett C GT/E wide-body car is one such example. With body parts of Zakspeed’s Ford Escort, the coupe made its first appearance in March 1981 at the DRM opener in Belgian Zolder.
The small team from near Heidelberg had quite some trouble getting the spectacular C-Coupe running in practice at the first round in Belgium. The usual teething troubles of an enthusiastic heart and soul project in a field of highly developed and factory-supported cars. This made the idea of entering an absolutely exotic car all the more courageous. After the first attempt had failed the Opel was much improved and returned to the track at Hockenheim. Late in August – again at Zolder – the car finished its only race. But the championship had already reached the end of its heyday – much to the regret of the many fans.
