Formula 3 hotspurs Karl Wendlinger, Heinz-Harald Frentzen and Michael Schumacher had fought a merciless battle in the German Formula 3 Championship of 1989. In the end Austrian Karl Wendlinger won the title one single point ahead of his German rivals.
As a reward all three of them were given a chance in the Mercedes-Benz support program to gather experience in their Group C cars with the prospect of a possible Formula 1 return of the Stuttgart brand. In 1991 the juniors Michael Schumacher and Karl Wendlinger were teamed up in the brand new Mercedes C291 for the WSC parallel to their Formula 1 debuts with Jordan and Leyton House respectively.

The World Sportscar Championship of 1991 had new regulations and used the naturally aspirated 3.5 litre engines of Formula 1. The new works cars of Jaguar, Peugeot and Mercedes raced as category 1 and the former Group C cars filled the meagre grids as category 2. While the two old hands Jean-Louis Schlesser and Jochen Mass started the season in the mature Sauber Mercedes C11, the young team mates were given the new C291 although the high revving 12-cylinder engine suffered from numerous teething problems.
