King George the First
Mercedes had parked the super talent George Russell at its engine customer Williams for three years to prepare him for the big Formula 1 career. What the young Briton got out of the inferior Williams especially in 2021, was simply brilliant and ultimately the ticket to the Mercedes works team for the 2022 season as a replacement for Valtteri Bottas. Throughout the entire 2022 season, Russell was completely on par with his teammate Lewis Hamilton, the seven-time world champion. At the penultimate race in Sao Paulo, however, he delivered his absolute masterpiece and even finished ahead of his famous teammate in the overall standings at the end of the year.
Only third after the rainy qualifying session, the new Mercedes star showed his class already in Saturday's sprint and scored eight extra points for the world championship with a victory. The Grand Prix itself began behind the safety car after an accident between Daniel Ricciardo and Kevin Magnussen on the first lap. When the race was green-flagged after six laps, George Russell took his first GP win with a fantastic performance. 34 World Championship points for sprint win, GP win and fastest race lap. It doesn't get any better than that!
