It is not just football that has its triple crown of national championship, cup and Champions League. Motorsport also has this unofficial title of holy trinity. However, hardly anyone has been able to achieve this to date due to the selection criteria, as the famous triple crown in motor racing includes victory in the Indy 500 in Indianapolis, success in the prestigious Formula 1 Grand Prix in Monaco and winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans. As no manufacturer today competes at top level in all three categories, only the big names in history are therefore eligible for the Triple Crown.
As Ferrari's success in Indianapolis is quite marginal, only McLaren has actually managed to win all three titles to date: Johnny Rutherford won the Indy 500 in the orange McLaren M16C, Alain Prost the 1984 Monaco F1 Grand Prix in the white and red McLaren MP4/2 TAG Porsche Turbo and the trio of J.J. Lehto, Yannick Dalmas and Masanori Sekiya the 1995 24 Hours of Le Mans in the anthracite-coloured McLaren F1 GTR BMW. Zak Brown's Formula 1 squad celebrated this unique motorsport success in style with a special livery in all three vehicle colours at the 2023 Monaco GP.
