Our next win is for Gil de Ferran! This is how McLaren boss Zak Brown was quoted at the end of December 2023 when he had heard of the sudden and unexpected death of the Brazilian, who had not only crowned his own racing career as Indy 500 winner in 2003, but had also worked for the McLaren Formula 1 Team for many years. The shock of the 56-year-old's death was deeply felt by the British team, but it was not until the Miami Grand Prix in May 2024 that they were able to dedicate a Grand Prix victory to the former McLaren Sporting Director. After podium finishes in Australia and China, Lando Norris finally managed to beat Max Verstappen in Florida. The McLaren pit board could now be labelled accordingly.
It was an emotional weekend for Lando Norris himself anyway, as Miami 2024 was his first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix victory. The weekend had got off to the worst possible start as the Brit retired on the first lap of Saturday's sprint race after a collision through no fault of his own. Things could only get better on Sunday. Starting from fifth position on the grid, Norris took the lead at the halfway point of the race and defended his position against rival Max Verstappen right up to the chequered flag. By now at the latest, the Brits were celebrating their new young superstar, who after his victory in Miami was suddenly also being talked about as a promising candidate for the 2024 F1 World Championship.
