Derek Daly had come the hard way to finally get a chance in Formula 1. In order to finance his early attempts in Formula Ford in the UK he even went to Australia working in a tin mine for quite a while. Living in a converted coach he travelled from race track to race track in 1976 always short of money. But all the efforts should be worth it when Daly won the prestigious Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch at the end of that year. Via Formula 2 the Irishman made it into Formula 1 in 1978, drove for Hesketh, Ensign and Tyrrell. Full throttle with inferior material led to a couple of huge shunts so Derek Daly was soon considered a crash pilot unjustified.

For Team Tyrrell he had achieved two 4th position finishes in 1980 but had also left a lot of expensive F1 scrap so he had to leave for March. In 1981 the wing cars had been banned but the designers developed high tech solutions creating similar downforce. Strong turbocharged engines entered Formula 1 while March was a one car team and Robin Herd’s March 811 had to get along with the outdated Cosworth V8 and Avon tires. A true ray of hope for the team was that Irish brewers Guinness supported their compatriot Daly. At the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim the Irishman was on his way to top ten when he retired his March with a broken steering.
