In the 1993 Formula 1 season, the progress in electronic chassis development became insane and reached its peak. The rich teams continued to develop their active suspensions, anti-slip controls and drive by wire systems at a pace that drastically widened the gap to the smaller teams. Their cash shortages consequently became more and more precarious. This also affected the Brescia Motor Sport BMS Scuderia Italia, which had switched from Dallara to Lola chassis for 1993 and in addition had to pay for the expensive Ferrari V12 engines from Maranello. This British-Italian combination never became a happy marriage.

Giuseppe Lucchini's team had contracted young reigning F3000 champion Luca Badoer and had probably promised a lot to the experienced Michele Alboreto, but these promises could not be kept. While the youngster only failed twice to qualify the heavy Lola T93/30, the veteran had to sit out five Grand Prix races. At the German GP in Hockenheim, Alboreto qualified last, 5 seconds behind the pole position. With a broken clutch, he made it to the finish line only just in 16th position. At the end of the 1993 season, BMS Scuderia Italia closed its doors forever and Giuseppe Lucchini invested his money with the Minardi Team.
