Emerson Fittipaldi had taken over the remains of Wolf Racing at the end of 1979 and founded his own team for 1980. In addition to designer Harvey Postlethwaite, Keke Rosberg also remained on board as a driver after the takeover. However, the success of the Fittipaldi F7 and F8 was very limited in 1980, so the Brazilian decided to step down as driver to concentrate fully on his role as team principal for 1981. But with an unreliable car, the inferior Cosworth V8 and a small budget due to constantly changing sponsors, even a wild dog like Keke Rosberg could not tear up trees.

For the 1981 German Grand Prix at Hockenheim, Italian brand DeLonghi stepped in as sponsor with their ice cream machine Il Gelataio, but despite his best efforts, Keke Rosberg missed out on qualifying by just under a tenth of a second, and team-mate Chico Serra even came last. In fact, the Finn only had three meagre finishes in 1981. Rosberg switched to Williams for 1982 and made it to the world championship title with just a single GP win. Emerson Fittipaldi reduced to one car for 1982 before the former world champion's big name disappeared from Formula 1 forever after a short history before 1983.
