The Formula 1 2022 season opener at Bahrain had eagerly been awaited. Would the new regulations change the ranking order considerably or would everything remain the same? At least for the Scuderia Ferrari the Sakhir race was a start made to measure. The new Ferrari F1-75 worked well straight away while the other top teams seemed to deal with considerable problems. Qualifying saw Charles Leclerc’s 10th pole position a tenth of a second ahead of Red Bull’s World Champion Max Verstappen who was followed by Carlos Sainz in the second Ferrari. After the disappointing ranks 5 and 7 in last year’s championship this was a first highlight.
The 57 laps on the 5.4 kilometre circuit became a duel between Leclerc and Verstappen. The Dutchman followed the Ferrari like a shadow but Charles Leclerc defended his lead even after the mid-race tire changes. With a mere four laps to go the podium seemed set when the Ferrari of Carlos Sainz caught up quickly and seemed to overtake Max Verstappen easily. Trouble with the fuel supply of the Red Bull RB18 forced the reigning champion to retire in the pits. A sensational double win for Ferrari in the first race of the season made Italy cheer. In the end Charles Leclerc became Vice World Champion and team principal Mattia Binotto left the Scuderia.
