The decision to return to 3.5 litre normally aspirated engines for the 1989 Formula 1 season attracted a record number of 20 teams and 39 cars, Eurobrun being the only team allowed to enter just one car. This enormous number of cars necessitated a merciless pre-qualifying on Friday morning. Only four out of 13 drivers qualified for the official practice sessions. For Eurobrun of Swiss compatriots Walter Brun and Gregor Foitek this tough procedure was to become an insurmountable obstacle. The bulky ER188b with its Judd V8 engine used early in the season simply proved too heavy and not fast enough.
By mid-season George Ryton had finished his new ER189 design a much slimmer car with appealing lines. For its debut at the German Grand Prix at Hockenheim the car was presented in the well-known orange Jägermeister livery. The German herb liqueur brand had supported Brun before at Le Mans and Group C racing. But Gregor Foitek failed to pre-qualify the car both at Hockenheim and at the Hungaroring. From Monza onwards Oscar Larrauri took over but the Argentinian never pre-qualified either. One year later the Swiss team ran out of money and Eurobrun Racing went down the history books of Formula 1.
