Spark 1/18th scale. High quality resincast model car with photo etched parts 1/18th scale. Model size approximately 25 cm.

The start into the 1981 Formula 1 season was delayed by the controversy between FISA and FOCA. The conflict over moving skirts and a surprising withdrawal of Goodyear caused major problems. Thus the Argentinian Grand Prix scheduled as round 1 in January was postponed to the 12th of April and held as the 3rd race of the season.

New regulations stipulated that the immovable side skirts had to be 60 mm above the ground measured in the pits. Brabham's mastermind Gordon Murray reacted by designing a hydraulically lowerable chassis that brought the skirts back on the tarmac in the race to regain the full ground effect.

Nelson Piquet and the Brabham-Cosworth V8 had defeated Williams and the Renault Turbos in Qualifying and the Brazilian led the race from start to finish. This first success and his victories at Imola and Hockenheim were the basis of Piquet's first title in Formula 1. At the end of the year he had beaten Carlos Reutemann by just one point to become F1 World Champion of 1981.
