Vienna born Helmuth Koinigg had started his motor racing career in 1969 with an ex Niki Lauda Mini Cooper S before joining Helmut Marko and the McNamara Team to follow the path of most young Austrian talents into a wild and crazy Formula Vee. Despite his success in Formula Vee, Formula Ford and F3 he never managed to raise the funds for a Formula 2 season not to mention his dream of Formula 1. Meanwhile he followed the call of Ford Cologne to race their Capri and Escort and in 1974 he even joined Martini Porsche for the Le Mans 24 Hours.

The money earned with Ford and Porsche plus the support of the Vienna Casino at Baden made a dream come true: Helmuth Koinigg hired Scuderia Finotto's Brabham for his F1 home Grand Prix in Austria in August of 1974. Although he failed to qualify the outdated car for the race the door to Formula 1 seemed open as John Surtees offered him a drive for the final two races. What appeared as happy end was to end up in a cruel tragedy when the young Austrian was killed in the Watkins Glen final after a suspension failure.
