Team owner Jack Brabham had been World Champion in his own car in 1966 but it was his team mate Denny Hulme to dominate the following season. The Kiwi had to wait until round 5 the French GP at Le Mans to drive the new design BT24. From this race to the end of the year he achieved six podium finishes and retired only once.

But even when driving the older design Brabham BT20 Repco V8 in the first four rounds Denny Hulme showed promising speed and reliability. While the new design BT24 already commanded of a light alloy engine block the BT20 still based on the older and heavier Oldsmobile block.

The New Zealander qualified the BT20 4th on the grid at Monaco and fought for the lead in the race with Lorenzo Bandini's Ferrari and Jackie Stewart's BRM. When Stewart retired Hulme was ahead but the final decision came tragically when Bandini's Ferrari caught fire after a crash at the harbour chicane on lap 81 and killed the Italian. Hulme became F1 World Champion of 1967.
