The BMW M3 E30 was probably the most successful touring car of all time. It was therefore obvious for the Munich car manufacturer to continue this success story with the successor E36. The new class 1 regulations of the DTM from 1993 seemed to offer every opportunity to do so, but it quickly became apparent that the long straight-six engine made the new race car too top-heavy. The engine would have had to be moved further back in the chassis. But the rule-makers said no. This seemed to be the early end of BMW’s new 3-series in DTM, as they subsequently withdrew from the popular racing series.
It is only thanks to the enthusiasm of German team boss Luggi Linder that a technically exceptional race car was born that deserves its special place in touring car history. Based on the BMW E36 325i Coupé, Linder had a class 1 chassis developed at Thompson TCP in England, fitted with a Formula 1-level pushrod rear axle. The engine was based on the four-cylinder of the former BMW M3 E30 Sport Evo, which, however, had reached its limit at 390 hp. The fact that this technological jewel was not successful at the time does not dampen the fascination for this outstanding racing car until today.
