Harald Ertl was the prototype of a professional racer and started early to search for solvent sponsors. The German Sachs group provided the financial backing in 1978 both for his Formula 1 adventures with Ensign and a full season in the brand new Schnitzer BMW 320 Turbo in the German Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft. With around 400 hp and a weight of 780 kg Schnitzer's new weapon was the car to beat in division 2 that year.

What looked promising on paper needed a character to realize at the tracks. And Ertl did so in a masterly dominant way finishing all eleven rounds in the points without any retirement. With even two drop results deducted he became German DRM Champion in 1978. The Norisring round and 90,000 spectators witnessed his cleverness: while his competitors blew their turbo engines or crashed he stayed cool and won ahead of Armin Hahne. The Austrian with German license took his Sachs budget to Zakspeed for 1979 and 1980 but was far less successful with the Ford Capri Turbo. He failed with a unique comeback in Formula 1 with ATS at Hockenheim in 1980. Aged only 33 years Harald Ertl died in a tragic plane crash in April of 1982.
