After the war, Gerhard Mitter landed in Leonberg, Swabia, as a displaced person. From the young mechanic in his father's DKW workshop, the tinkerer developed into one of Germany's fastest racing drivers by the mid-1960s - an all-rounder who excelled in all racing classes. As a Porsche works driver he won in Porsche 904, 906, 908, 910 and in his only race in the brand new Porsche 917 he set the car on pole position at Spa in 1969. The Swabian was European hillclimb champion three times and won the Targa Florio in 1969. His monoposto career reads comparatively modest. Nevertheless, he made it into the BMW Formula 2 works team in the 1969 season.

At the German Grand Prix on the legendary 23 km Nordschleife of the Nürburgring in August 1969, the field of 16 Formula 1 cars was traditionally filled with Formula 2 cars. Among the 12 F2 racers were the three works BMW 269 F2 of Dieter Quester, Hubert Hahne and Gerhard Mitter. It was probably an untightened screw on the steering linkage that caused Mitter's Formula 2 to run off the track in practice at 250 km/h between the Flugplatz and Schwedenkreuz sections. The car cut an endless swath through the forest. Without crash barriers and fences, poor Gerhard Mitter had no chance of survival at that time.
