An underfinanced team with a Cosworth V8 N/A engine had nothing to laugh about in 1983. The Cosworth DFV’s lack of power against the new turbo engines of BMW, Renault, Ferrari, TAG or Alfa Romeo was too big. Team principal Jackie Oliver needed determined drivers to collect one or the other championship point, the last one granted for 6th position in 1983. Marc Surer was set for the #29 car and finished in the points on three occasions. In the sister car Alan Jones gave a half-hearted comeback at Long Beach but was replaced by Chico Serra. On home ground at Spa young Belgian talent Thierry Boutsen took over the second cockpit.
A fresh breeze for Arrows came at Monza after the team had acquired sponsorship from the well-known Italian peppermint brand Golia. The whole team was in a good mood when the repainted cars were presented in the Monza pitlane even if qualifying pointed out the limits of the Cosworth engine on the Italian highspeed track. 18th on the grid Boutsen retired on lap 40 but Marc Surer fought his way from 20th on the grid to 10th at the chequered flag. The peppermint deal ended right after the race and the white and green Arrows disappeared in the Formula 1 history books.
